New York man paralyzed in 2020 bike accident walks again, shares story

[ad_1]

Cory Moses walking with his forearm crutches.
  • Cory Moses was paralyzed in October 2020, when he was hit by a car while on his bicycle.
  • After five surgeries and months of recovery, he took his first steps again last summer.
  • Today, Moses can walk 1.5 miles and hopes to compete in the 2024 Paralympics.

A New York man once paralyzed in a 2020 accident can now walk again.

In late October 2020, Cory Moses of Brooklyn was having a “regular” Sunday. But while on a bike two blocks away from meeting his then-partner for brunch, he was hit by a car.

A parked car opened a door into Moses, pushing him into the street, where he was hit by another vehicle. The accident resulted in two broken arms, six fractured ribs and a fractured spine, which left the then-25-year-old paralyzed.

“There was a lot of damage done,” Moses told USA TODAY. He added that, while the state of his injury and a twitch in his leg suggested the possibility for recovery of minor movements, he was initially told that he probably wouldn’t walk again.

Still, there was hope, and Moses was dedicated to his recovery.

“It was very much a changing point for me,” Moses said. “It was a lot to deal with in the beginning. But while I was in ICU for a couple weeks, I just accepted where I was and understood that I survived because of a greater purpose… [My] mission was to understand what that was and who I was going to be after this.”

Following the accident, Moses underwent a total of five surgeries. At Mount Sinai Hospital, he had his final two surgeries and extensive physical therapy.

Dr. Angela Riccobono, director of rehabilitation psychology at Mount Sinai and one of Cory’s doctors, applauded her patient’s perseverance and “most positive mindset out of the gate” after his “life changed in a matter of seconds.”

“Cory is such a special young man. I’ve been doing this job for almost 30 years and I’ve never met anybody like him,” Riccobono told USA TODAY. “After an injury like this, [many people] become overwhelmed by the uncertainty… But instead, Cory embraced uncertainty as an opportunity for growth… He didn’t define himself by his limitations, but by his possibilities – at such an early stage in a traumatic injury, it was profound.”

4 Ways to Attract Your Soulmate

4 Ways to Attract Your Soulmate

[ad_1]

Really listen, positivity, preparation and humility.

Here are four ways that will help you attract your soulmate.

1. Listen.

And I mean really listen. Actively pay attention to what the other person is saying, and give some cues – like nodding your head or saying yes – that shows the other person you’re focused on them and understand what they are saying.

Don’t respond right away. Ask questions, get curious, listen for more information, and then respond after taking time to understand their point of view. Don’t take over the conversation the second the other person is quiet. This shows that you were formulating your response as they spoke instead of listening intently.

Be curious about the other person so you can get to know them and learn more things about them. When they’re talking, encourage them. Say, “Tell me more!” It’s a great line to open things up and it helps you get into a deeper conversation. Obviously, you need to balance the conversation and tell your own stories. You can’t just ask them questions all the time.

2. Grow your gratitude.

Do an attitude check on yourself. Are you being grateful and positive? It’s important to be grateful every day. That has a tremendous impression upon the person you’re talking to. When you have that kind of a grateful, positive mindset, the other person gets a good vibe from you.

While the pandemic has come with its challenges, it has also brought opportunities. First of all, the walls have come down in order for people to date more easily. Things are faster, and people are interacting faster. You don’t have to get on a plane anymore. The cost factor is out of the way and for many this is a blessing.

Seeing things with a gratitude lens comes naturally to some, and others have to try to implement it. My advice is to always try to keep the positive in mind. Keep a gratitude journal where you write down what you are grateful for. Try not to repeat the same things so that each day, you are adding new things and growing your list, and along with it, your sense of gratitude and zest for life! Nothing can be more attractive than a person who loves life and appreciates all they have.

3. Prepare and plan ahead.

Think about what you’ll be talking to your date about before the date begins. An important aspect to keep in mind are your micro-skills: eye contact, comfort level, how you dress, etc. Aesthetics are very important because it means a lot. If you dress well, it impacts your behavior. It impacts how you feel about yourself, and how you present yourself. You don’t get a second chance to make a great first impression. Ask a close friend or mentor for advice in this area and ask for help if fashion is not your forte. It’s important to be yourself but also to put your best foot forward. Balance is key.

4. Be humble.

Know yourself. Know what you need in order to attract what you want. Having a top ten list is important so that you’re not floundering all over the place. Execute your dating strategy with a clearer idea of what you will need so that it will make you happy. Take your long list of needs, wants, and desires and cut it down. Pare it down to what you truly need to be happy – all the rest is icing on the cake!

Every individual has their own mosaic of good things. The most important thing is to bring yours to the table when you’re dating. Maybe share your unique hobby, a nice life lesson you heard, a cute anecdote or story that you picked up in a video, or a humorous story about something that happened to you. Read Dale Carnegie’s book, How to Win Friends and Influence People. Better your conversation style. Get involved. Be passionate. Your conversation should look like you believe in it. That you live it.

My blessing to you is that you are able to attract the soulmate you need and recognize them when they come your way.

Emirates News Agency - UAE is fast-tracking low-carbon economic growth to deliver new jobs, new industries

Emirates News Agency – UAE is fast-tracking low-carbon economic growth to deliver new jobs, new industries

[ad_1]

ABU DHABI, 29th March, 2022 (WAM) — The UAE is fast-tracking low-carbon economic growth to deliver new jobs, new industries and new revenue streams, according to Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Special Envoy for Climate Change.

Speaking at the Middle East and North Africa Climate Week (MENACW2022), Dr. Al Jaber explained that the UAE is adopting a comprehensive, balanced and proactive approach to climate action and the energy transition that delivers sustainable economic growth.

“As a young country, and a responsible energy leader, the UAE has always faced the future with a positive mindset, and addressed challenges head-on. This is why we stopped flaring 30 years before the World Bank asked the industry to do so. It’s why we achieved 0.01 percent methane intensity 20 years before the global pledge asking for a gradual reduction. It’s why we began to capture C02 (carbon dioxide) on an industrial scale before the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) called it an essential tool for de-carbonization. And it’s why we became the first hydrocarbon producer to power our operations with zero-carbon energy,” Dr. Al Jaber said.

He pointed out that the UAE was also the first country in the region to sign and ratify the Paris Agreement, the first to commit to an economy wide reduction in emissions and the first to announce a Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. The UAE has chosen to lead in these areas, because it views climate challenges “not just as problems to fix, but as opportunities to seize,” according to Dr. Al Jaber.

While the world mobilises investments for a new energy economy and addresses the climate challenge, Dr. Al Jaber emphasised that recent events have “reminded us that we cannot simply switch off the current energy system.”

“We all need to recognise that the energy transition will take time and require sober, thoughtful planning. It is more evident now than ever before that this cannot be rushed. The push to divest from hydrocarbons has led to a supply crunch that is having the biggest impact on the most exposed. The clear lesson is that we should not adopt climate policies that lead to energy poverty. We need to keep investing in low-cost, low-carbon energy that can provide the baseload power that the world relies on,” said Dr. Al Jaber.

Dr. Al Jaber had reiterated this message during his speech at the Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum held at Expo 2020 Dubai.

On climate finance, he said it can be an effective tool for climate action as he urged the international community to do more and fulfil the $100 billion climate pledge made to developing nations over a decade ago.

“The international community continues to fall short of the $100 billion climate finance pledge they made to developing nations over a decade ago. We need bold targets going forward and we need to start treating climate risks as potential global security risks.

“We have taken a partnership approach focused on projects in countries most exposed to climate risks, because we know that local resilience builds global resilience. We have provided over $1 billion in climate aid to more than 40 countries. And our experience tells us that once concessional finance is there, private finance will follow.”

He concluded by extending the UAE’s invitation to governments, the private sector, financial institutions and civil society to partner on solutions that make sense for our climate and the economy. He said “we should not have to choose between the two. We can and we must make progress on both.”

The MENA Climate Week aims to accelerate collaboration and integrate climate action into global pandemic recovery. Other dignitaries present at the opening ceremony of this first edition included Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) and MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA); and Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of UNFCCC.

Students Try Group Fitness Classes in a Journey to Activity

Students Try Group Fitness Classes in a Journey to Activity

[ad_1]

Pushing their limits, students in a 7 a.m. Cycle and Shred class spin their hearts out. The class instructor, first-year Brooke Carter created a cycle circuit for the first 20 minutes of the class and an off-the-bike workout for the rest of the time. Photos by Mary Caulfield

Pepperdine students often exercise at the Firestone Fieldhouse Weight Room, on the track and in the Towers gym and Seaside Fitness Center. What some students aren’t fully aware of are Campus Recreation‘s Group Fitness classes.

Campus Recreation aimed to raise awareness of these group fitness classes by giving 15 to 20 minute classes at Mullin Town Square on Feb. 17. Beyond tabling, instructors and students in classes gave insight into what Group Fitness Classes are.

“I feel like it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, get to work out and start your day productively,” first-year instructor Brooke Carter said. “I feel like not enough people take advantage of what we have, especially because they’re free.”

First-year Hailey Emmons said since fall 2021, Campus Recreation has changed its schedule, staff and fee for more student-friendly classes. The $75 cost is now a free-of-charge membership.

“I was hoping more people would come,” Emmons said. “It’s really fun doing it with a lot of people and not just suffering by yourself.”

Now that more instructors and classes are available, Emmons said students can exercise in many different ways to fit however their mind and body are feeling.

“If I’m sore, I want a yoga class, and Summer Xia is good with her yoga class, Yin Yang Yoga,” Emmons said. “[In spin class] Mikayla de la Flore does a dance thing [with] more arms and lifting off. Then, circuit [training is] really fun because you get to do a whole lot of different things and you’re just working against yourself.”

Students stand with hands at heart center in

When first-year Gabby Johnson’s alarm goes off at 5:30 a.m. for her to get to a spin class by 6 a.m., she said her first instinct is to text her roommate. Johnson said having accountability helps her get up in the morning and stay consistent. But, accountability doesn’t stop when arriving at classes.

“I love working out with other people — like a little community that keeps you accountable and makes me want to work harder,” Johnson said.

First-year Daniela Sandoval said she is just starting to explore the different classes and has loved making the time to be active and finding a positive mindset.

“For me, I don’t work out at all, so it’s just making the time to come here,” Sandoval said. “Also, finding a balance and being OK with not being able to weigh as much as other people because you’re just getting started. It’s just motivational and inspiring to take time out of your days and try to be active.”

First-year Melia Wade said exercising for the first time can be an intimidating experience, especially if you’re not a “gym person.” Wade said she has found the classes help her as she begins her exercise journey.

“[The classes] help me stay active, make me manage my time better and keep me accountable,” Wade said. “I’m not really a gym person. I respect and commend those who are, but I’m just not. So, I think a class is more structured, and I need that.”

Students new to the class aren’t the only ones nervous in their first experiences at group classes — Carter said she laughs when looking back at her first time instructing a 5:30 a.m. spin class over Zoom.

“Everything went completely opposite the way I wanted it to go,” Carter said. “I would forget to call out what exercise was next and forget to turn up the music. But now, looking back, I always joke about my first class.”

Emmons, Johnson, Sandoval, Wade and Carter all said their advice for students on the verge of going to a class is: Just try it.

“Just showing up is half the battle, so definitely just try it, and if you don’t like it, at least you can say you tried it, and if it’s just not for you, then find something else,” Wade said.

A dress bank that reaches out to the needy

A dress bank that reaches out to the needy

[ad_1]

As many as 1,300 women volunteers of the Ashakiranam Dress Bank, an initiative launched by the Wayanad Social Service Society (WSSS), a non-governmental organisation in the district, have set a model in providing solace to hundreds of persons, especially tribespeople, by disbursing clothes free of cost to the needy for the past two years.

“This endeavour provides dresses primarily to poor cancer patients and needy community people. These dresses are collected from different houses. The clothes are serviceable but not useable for them and are kept in a room on the WSSS campus at Mananthavady. All the volunteers make the act a routine in a monthly schedule,” says Father Paul Koottala, executive director, WSSS.

“The dress bank is truly a need-based intervention of the WSSS and we see a good number of people come and get the benefit of the noble initiative”, Fr. Koottala said.

The idea occurred to some of the volunteers during their activities in a tribal hamlet when they realised that many members of the hamlet lacked proper clothing, especially women and children, he said. “We approved the idea and set up the dress bank at the WSSS campus to keep the clothes mobilised by the volunteers,” he said.

There is a log book kept at the dress bank to record the all the activities of the facility. Any needy person can come and take the clothes according to their requirement after mentioning the details in the log book. Similarly, anyone wishing to contribute clothes too can do so after entering the details in the log book.

“We have collected thousands of usable dresses and distributed them to the needy. Every month, volunteers bring clothes from their operational areas and expand these services to more poor people” says Father Jinoj Palathadathil, one of the directors of the WSSS.

Shoba Edayoorkunnu, a volunteer said, “I feel very happy for getting an opportunity to help those in need. People are donating with a positive mindset. This is, in a way, making changes in me and motivating me to involve more in this act”.

How to stick with New Year's Resolutions: Why people tend to fail

How to stick with New Year’s Resolutions: Why people tend to fail

[ad_1]

Studies show 80-percent of New Year’s resolutions fail by mid-February. Psychiatrists say a common reason people fail at resolutions is simply their mentality.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Planning to save money by spending less this year or making it a goal to lose weight by working out every single day are just some of the most common New Year’s resolutions people make every year. Unfortunately, many folks won’t stick with them. Studies show 80-percent of New Year’s resolutions fail by mid-February.

Andrew Farah, M.D. is a psychiatrist with Novant Health. He said one of the most common reasons people fail to stick with resolutions is their mentality.

“I feel bad about myself. Therefore, I’m going to change XYZ,” Farah said. “You want to say, ‘I want to enhance myself; I want to feel better.’ The mistake a lot of people make is it comes from a negative space, then a positive space. We know that a little bit of self-criticism is motivating, but a lot of it will drag you down. People are more likely to accomplish things with a positive mindset rather than one of criticism.”

Farah said these are some of the best ways to stick to a resolution:

  • Write down your resolution
  • Tell someone you trust
  • Set realistic expectations
  • Create a timetable
  • Measure your progress
  • Carve out time

“I can’t tell you the number of people that tell me they want to accomplish something, but they just didn’t change their lifestyle enough to make the time for it,” Farah said. “Sometimes, you just have to stop what you’re doing and go to the gym. Stop what you’re doing and write that chapter. Whatever your goal is.”

Farah said it’s ok to make adjustments to a resolution as life changes and the year goes on.

El Taco Santo restaurant in Phoenix victim of 3 minute burglary

El Taco Santo in Phoenix burglarized

[ad_1]

A suspect smashed in the glass door of a Phoenix Mexican restaurant, then stole their cash register.

PHOENIX — When Phoenix restaurant owner Johnny Byrd walked into work, he instantly knew something was off.

Glass scattered across the floor and a surveillance camera revealed that his restaurant, El Taco Santo, was targeted by a masked burglar overnight Saturday.

“We came in and to my surprise, the back door was already swung right open and then so we immediately knew something was wrong,” said Byrd.

Then he checked the surveillance video and saw the suspect crawling on all fours, smashing the front door and running in. He got away with the cash register.

“It definitely feels like a violation,” Byrd said. “I was quite shocked to be a victim because Ahwatukee is a safe place overall, we have crimes here and there but every city does.”

Although he suffered some losses, he said he was lucky overall.

“Nothing else was really missing or even touched,” Byrd said. “It could have been so much worse, you just have to look at the positive we’ll be able to recover from this.”

With a positive mindset, he’s using this as a lesson others can hopefully benefit from as well.

“I’m just blown away by all the support the local community has shown us after I posted on Facebook to let everyone know hey, lessons learned, make sure businesses are not doing what I did. Don’t leave any money or leave it unlocked so they don’t do any damage to it if they do come in.”

The Phoenix Police Department are investigating and in the meantime, Byrd said he’s going to do some investigating of his own.

“They knew exactly what they were doing, it took three minutes total,” he said. “We are looking at all the video to see if it was someone casing the place a week before.”

Supporting children’s mental health

Posted on Jan 20, 2022 | Author Dr Suhail Naik

The human brain is susceptible to environmental, social, stresses and strains. To keep a positive mindset and progressive neurodevelopment, parents have to create an environment where a child feels a sense of belonging, feeling connected, sense of trust.

Building strong, positive relationships among students, school staff, and parents is important to promoting mental wellness.

Children need early emotional and social feeding to develop different competencies in the social and emotional domain of mental health. They need to know that they can overcome challenges and accomplish goals through their actions.

During early development, children should feel positive and safe in the school environment. Feeling safe is critical for progressive learning and mental health. The teachers should always promote positive behaviors.

Teaching children social skills, problem-solving and conflict resolution supports good mental health. Positive feedback validates and reinforces valued behaviors.

Encourage children to help others. Children need to know that they can make a difference. Pro-social behaviors build self-esteem, foster connectedness, reinforce personal responsibility, and present opportunities for positive recognition.

Encouraging good physical health supports good mental health. Healthy eating habits, regular exercise and adequate sleep protect kids against the stress of tough situations. Regular exercise also decreases negative emotions like anxiety, anger and depression.

Parents and teachers should know symptoms of mental health problems as their early recognition and intervention can save a deviating brain or mindset.

School mental health professionals can also provide useful information on symptoms of problems like depression, anxiety, phobia, autistic disorders or suicide risk.
